Torrential Precipitation Aggravate Conditions for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Officials Alert
Heavy storms over the recent period have intensified the precarious situation of the hundreds of thousands of uprooted residents in the territory, as reported by aid agencies.
"Awful" Conditions Poses Serious Risks
A representative described the recent storm as "terrible", with downpours so heavy that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.
"Last night was really difficult for the residents. The heavy rains were so powerful... And the winds were so powerful," said the spokesperson.
Officials express grave concern that young ones living in makeshift shelters in soaked garments will contract hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Casualties and Extensive Damage
Health authorities have reported that one baby has passed away from the cold and no fewer than 11 other people have died in structural failures caused by the storms.
Additional accounts suggest a higher death toll. Officials reported that multiple structures had totally fallen and dozens had sustained partial collapse.
- Roughly 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency shelters inundated.
- Many people required to find new shelter.
Assistance Efforts Seen as Insufficient
Agencies have escalated shipments of tarpaulins, warm covers and clothing since the ceasefire started, but they have said there is still not enough aid entering.
"We are operating tirelessly to bring in that aid and to allocate it, but the magnitude of the requirements is so vast that we are faced with many thousands of people and children who are truly struggling nightly," stated one representative.
Future Concerns and Agreement Plans
The second phase of the agreement involves arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of troops, and other provisions.
Relief groups have underscored the need for "expanded and ongoing aid to meet pressing and ongoing needs."
The war was initiated by an attack in the autumn of 2023. Subsequent actions have caused a significant number of fatalities in the area, based on medical data.
