Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came to the Thunder back in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning points deep into a second overtime period as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.

Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a personal-best five shots from beyond the arc.

But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside the game's hero.

"Determination and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did enough defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Prior to the game, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were awarded their title rings.

Oklahoma City beat the Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.

Indiana will have the chance to secure some early revenge on this Friday when they face Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to prevent his current team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.

Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the road team.

The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
