For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the memories of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the events in the tunnel is detailed in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

So, What's in the Case?

Based on what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—abilities he would genetically impart to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the control of a dark entity, much like how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
