The North London club has declared that its disputed sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June this upcoming year.

Context and Criticism

This deal, reportedly valued at around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since come under fire.

Such scrutiny is due to the country's reported backing for the M23 forces in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the Congolese government by failing to convene with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to discuss the partnership.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their following across the continent.

Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and sustainable tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to visit the nation, and establishing a durable base for tourism growth,” stated an club announcement.

The announcement added that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's ambition to become an international sporting hub in Africa and stage additional international competitions while delivering local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's top executive, described the partnership as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's goals.

But that is not how a segment of the club's followers, with the protest movement Arsenal Peace Advocates demonstrating outside the Emirates Stadium during the initial Champions League semi-final match against Paris Saint-Germain in the end of April.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to conceal the Rwanda branding on uniforms.

Broader Context and Other Clubs

In the same month, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

Simultaneously, the Madrid-based team entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the Madrid-based team's male and female kits.
