The Animated Series' Creator Unveils Alastor and Rosie's Origin Tale Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Devoted fans of the show at last got a long-awaited backstory in season 2's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt a lot of discussion and pose numerous questions about the essence of one particular demon Overlord who appears significantly stronger than anyone previously understood. The new revelations feature a look into the mortal existence of a beloved character before his death and sentence to Hell.
A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments
The show's creator disclosed an inside detail about “It's a Deal” – it serves as a huge hint for the third season. Additionally, she provided further details into the methodology of designing the human versions of her infernal cartoon figures.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back reveals that popular personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife beforehand to secure a strong position there. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This raises an important query: How is Rosie sufficiently strong to raise Alastor over all other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that encompasses so much, moving into season 3,” the showrunner states. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The answer could be many things, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for fans to witness it.”
There’s no telling how long viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Still, she states withholding on those details is a crucial aspect of keeping the second season's attention in the right places.
“The difficulty of any kind of deal with demons, or stories that have mysteries, is providing the audience just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and allowing that be gratifying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”
Mysteries Resolved in Season 3
The showrunner promises that season 3 will tackle the questions fans have been asking, such as why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to disappear for a seven-year period, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these humans are doing, and all that — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she says.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides another glimpse into what the main characters of Demonic Sinners appeared as as mortals, following after seeing Sir Pentious’ Victorian-era human form in episode 2. The creator says that significant consideration went into these character designs.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold great significance,” she notes. “They range from looking quite distinct from their infernal version to seeming almost identical. With Pentious, the initial design we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between going with something that symbolizes the personality, as opposed to going with an option that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward creating a design that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the primary controversy over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we believe the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there's always a way. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to view additional of the appearances of the human versions.”
