One senior officer who jumped to the aid of a fellow officer that was assaulted by a blade-wielder was granted the Royal Recognition for Bravery.

Sergeant Tim Ansell struggled against twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Brown after he placed a knife to the throat of his colleague Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown initiated the assault as the policemen and their third officer, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were talking to a driver after a vehicle incident in the area in summer 2023.

Brown knifed and cut both Sergeant Ansell and Sgt Foster prior to Police Constable Wolstencroft stopped him with a Taser.

"Policeman attacked," PC Wolstencroft was heard to say over his communication device.

Bodyworn and dashboard camera recording released by the agency showed Brown, wearing in dark clothing with a hood up, rush to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife outstretched.

He collided with the policeman who stumbled and dropped to the ground, before Sergeant Ansell jumped in and struggled to restrain him to the pavement although being continually attacked with the blade.

PC Wolstencroft drew his Taser and waited for a clear shot, concluding the struggle to an finish.

Sgt Ansell can be heard to say: "Please provide something on my neck now, I've been stabbed in the neck."

Sgt Ansell suffered multiple open wounds to his neck and additional cuts to his arms and body, whereas Sergeant Foster received knife wounds.

The department reported Sgt Foster employed his hands to stop his colleague's bleeding before medical personnel arrived.

The new award comes subsequent to the law enforcement team won organizational Courage Honors in fall 2023 and the police federation award from the area union branch in April 2024.
