The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members seeming to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on this week.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for the student had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The student maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the backing of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication warned that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the society in May.
