Los Angeles Battles Record-Breaking Heat Only One Week Following Severe Winter Weather.
After enduring heavy downpours that caused flooding across areas in the city, Los Angeles is now confronting abnormally warm conditions for the end of February.
All-Time High Temperatures
During the day Friday, the thermometer climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown Los Angeles, per data from weather officials. This breaks the previous daily record for this date, which was 31 degrees Celsius (88 Fahrenheit) and was set in the previous year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official maps for the region.
Safety Alerts
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations suggested:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Shift
This sharp rise in mercury arrives just after a powerful storm system that pummeled the region last week. That event delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to higher elevations, causing evacuation orders for many residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Temperatures Easing
The outlook suggests cooler conditions is coming. Temperatures were forecast to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by Friday night.
Other locales that hit ninety degrees included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to experience the high 80s.
For the weekend, downtown LA can expect temperatures in the 80s, with a further cooldown expected for the week ahead.
