English player Jordan Henderson reveals he has experienced "tough moments" since departing from Liverpool for Saudi Arabia and admits he could "have made different decisions".

The veteran midfielder received backlash for departing Liverpool in 2023 to sign with Al-Ettifaq in a nation where same-sex relationships are against the law.

Henderson had formerly been a high-profile champion of LGBTQ+ rights and expressed regret for upsetting or hurting members in the LGBTQ+ community when he departed from Saudi Arabia to join Ajax following a six-month period.

England Selection and Thoughts

Henderson was left out of Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad but is back to the Premier League with Brentford and England's selection under Thomas Tuchel.

"In my opinion it was the cause why I missed the Euros," Henderson stated. "While I was in Saudi I think I was in every camp leading up to the Euros."

"Timing-wise, with everything in hindsight, yes - possibly I would have made different decisions."

"However at the moment that's how I felt and the decision I made was for numerous reasons and I alone know them reasons."

Personal Struggles

"Honestly speaking, over the past few years I have had various tough moments. It was similar to a parting when I left Liverpool."

"Of course I'm not without fault and I've made mistakes in the past. Certainly I will have during my career."

"However all I've ever attempted to do is the right thing."

England Career

Henderson has gained 85 caps since making his England debut against France in 2010.

He is in Tuchel's squad to face Wales and Latvia this week and feels he still has a lot to contribute on the pitch.

"The key people are the coach, the coaching staff and the players and what they think," said Henderson.

"Inquire with them what they believe, if I am a cheerleader when I am here. I doubt one of the finest managers in Europe would be selecting me just to do that."
