Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Content That Provoked the Dispute

The video footage, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who previously worked in armed forces or intelligence capacities.

"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and support this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "At present, the threats to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute commands that break the legal system or our founding principles."

The Former President's Furious Response

The clip appeared to prompt a angry reply from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he stated: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Leaders Respond

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership issued a unified declaration condemning the statements.

"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our country with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged online messages and retract his violent rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration continued.

Lawmakers' Firm Answer

The officials who participated in the video also released a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who love this United States and made an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the former president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the national charter and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They stated: "All citizens must unite and condemn the president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."

More Partisan Reactions

The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the capital punishment of government members."

He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and absolutely."

The GOP leader justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."

The Republican leader also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and decide all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative replied: "Certainly not."

"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative stated. "There are sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."

She added: "The purity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
