Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing undesired offerings might be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 gifts given to her by world leaders while abroad. The eclectic collection is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, collectively, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. A date remains to be announced, but the goal is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue benefiting a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Treasures
The presents reportedly stored in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been stored away over a long period.
A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was reviewed by officials. The discussion focused on whether a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
A Global Array of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the former US president.
- A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the exotic footwear," one might note.
Political Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the international platform once again.
The forthcoming sale highlights a distinct method to manage the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
