The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from running for public office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
