Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
