A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A small number of other platform users also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
