2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. But, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is partially visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming looks particularly pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
